Some organizations require a translated document to be accompanied by an affidavit from the person who completed the translation. In a translator’s affidavit, the translator swears or affirms that they are competent in the relevant languages and that the translation is accurate to the best of their knowledge.

For many IRCC applications, a Canadian certified translator does not need to provide an affidavit. If the translation is completed by an uncertified translator, IRCC may require the translator to swear an affidavit before a Notary Public, Commissioner of Oaths, or Commissioner for Taking Affidavits. Requirements depend on the organization receiving the documents.

Important:

• The translator who is swearing the affidavit must attend the appointment and provide valid identification.
• Do not sign the translator’s affidavit before the appointment. It must be sworn or affirmed and signed in the presence of the Commissioner or Notary Public.
• Our role is to administer the oath or affirmation and complete the appropriate commissioning or notarial act.
• Commissioning a translator’s affidavit does not mean that the Notary Public has independently checked or certified the accuracy of the translation.
• Some organizations require the translation to be completed by a certified or accredited translator and may not accept an affidavit from an uncertified translator.
• For IRCC matters, an uncertified translator generally cannot be the applicant or certain family members, and specific translation requirements may apply.
• Requirements may differ depending on the government agency, institution, country, or organization receiving the translation.
